The rich people of ancient China fancied headgear and took a liking to it. Usually the more noble you were, the fancier headgear you could wear. All ancient Chinese wore their hair long, men and women, because it was said that hair came from your ancestors and was extremely disrespectful to cut it. Hair was usually worn in a topknot and could be decorated by placing decorative pins and sticks through it.
